Patrice Motsepe yesterday arrived in Dakar, the capital of Senegal, as tensions continue to mount following the controversial reversal of the 2026 Africa Cup of Nations final result, a decision that has sparked widespread debate across African football.

Motsepe’s visit comes almost a month after the Confederation of African Football ruled that the Senegal national football team had forfeited their 1–0 victory over the hosts, the Morocco national football team, in the final played on 18 January in Rabat.

CAF later awarded Morocco a 3–0 victory on 17 March, citing regulations on match abandonment, after Senegal players, coaching staff, and officials walked off the pitch following a late penalty decision awarded to Morocco that was subsequently missed by forward Brahim Diaz.

The decision has triggered strong reactions in Senegal, with the Senegalese Football Federation confirming it has lodged an appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The Senegalese government has also called for an international investigation into alleged irregularities within CAF’s disciplinary process.

Ahead of his visit, Motsepe had announced plans to travel to both Senegal and Morocco as part of efforts to promote unity within African football and manage the growing controversy.

He said the aim of the engagements was to reinforce cooperation across the continent, even as CAF faces increasing scrutiny over its governance and disciplinary decisions.

Upon arrival in Dakar, Motsepe is expected to be received by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye at the presidential palace, with a press conference scheduled to follow later in the day.

Speaking previously on the matter, Motsepe stated that CAF would respect any ruling delivered by CAS, adding that his personal views were not relevant to the ongoing legal process.

The high-level visit underscores the sensitivity of the dispute, which has not only strained relations between Senegalese football authorities and CAF but also raised broader questions about regulatory consistency and transparency within African football governance.

As the appeal process continues, the controversy remains one of the most closely watched developments in continental football this year, with stakeholders awaiting further clarity on the final outcome.
