The lawmaker representing Oyi/Ayamelum Federal Co,nstituency in Anambra State Maureen Gwacham, has addressed a viral video that sparked debate online, explaining that she was unprepared when called upon to second a motion during plenary.
The clip, widely shared on social media, shows Gwacham seconding a motion but struggling to outline its details when prompted by the Speaker—an exchange that drew criticism from some viewers, with a few labeling her a “bench warmer.”
Responding in a statement on Wednesday, Gwacham said the moment was taken out of context, noting that she had been “momentarily caught off guard” while settling into her seat when she was unexpectedly recognized.
“I was just settling into my seat when Mr Speaker called on me to second the motion moved by Hon. Muktar Tolani Shagaya, an equally cerebral legislator known for presenting credible motions,” she said.
She clarified that the motion focused on the urgent need to install Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) in government institutions and public buildings nationwide to reduce preventable deaths.
Gwacham also expressed appreciation to constituents who reached out following the incident and reiterated her commitment to effective representation.
“My focus remains on delivering for the good people of Oyi/Ayamelum, and I value the confidence they continue to place in me,” she added.
The motion, sponsored by Shagaya, advocates strengthening emergency medical response systems across public spaces in Nigeria.
