Bishop of the Anglican Communion in Nigeria, Diocese of Calabar, Rt. Rev. Nneoyi Onen, has called for restoration of Nigeria’s justice system that hinges  on truth, and national values, to salvage the nation from institutional decay.

The cleric made the call at a media  briefing to herald the second session of the 12th Synod of the Diocese in Calabar.

The cleric lamented the abnormality in Nigeria, describing the nation as “dead” due to non-functional laws, collapsed institutions, leaders living in denial, impunity and corruption, inaccessibility to basic necessities like food and freedom.

The Anglican cleric who charged the federal government to overhaul the judicial system, emphasised  the need for truth, justice, equity and fairness.

He warned that no real progress can be achieved unless justice is institutionalised and the rule of law upheld.

The cleric proposed a leaner, more accountable governance system, dismantling of the “Nigerian factor” of get-rich-quick syndrome, corruption, and shortcuts to success.

The cleric also called for the discarding of the current Nigerian Constitution, advocating for a new one that reflects  unity, equity and fairness.

“We need to kill this toxic mindset that glorifies fraud and mediocrity. We must start telling ourselves the truth, even if it hurts,” he charged. “We must emphasize merit, ability, and integrity over tribalism, nepotism, and favouritism,” he said.

He demanded for the discarding of the current Nigerian Constitution, describing it as inadequate and lacking legitimacy, advocating for creation of a new constitution that reflects equity and unity.
