There was confusion in Lagos Island yesterday as a six-storey building on Afriland Tower, Broad Street, Lagos, where a branch of the United Bank for Africa is located, went up in flames.

Several United Bank for Africa (UBA) workers and other occupants of the building were seen in a viral video escaping through a ladder and jumping down from the highrise structure.

Commenting on the development, the deputy controller-general of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Ogabi Olajide, said the occupants were being evacuated.

He said, “A fire outbreak is being battled at a six-storey building on Afriland Tower, Broad Street, Lagos Island.

“The call was received at 13:38 hours, and fire crews from Ebute Elefun Fire Station and Sari Iganmu Fire Station responded.

“The fire originated in the inverter room located in the basement of the building, while smoke has spread across multiple floors and engulfed the structure.

“Evacuation of occupants is in progress, while firefighting operations have been concluded, dousing the earlier panic before the arrival of the first responders.”
