Correctional Service Mourns, Unveils Identity Of Slain Officer In Kogi Jailbreak

The leadership of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) has revealed the identity of the officer who tragically lost his life during the jailbreak at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Koton-Karfe, Kogi State, on Monday, March 24, 2025.

The fallen officer was identified as Senior Correctional Assistant (SCA) Shuaibu King David.

In a statement issued by the signed by the national spokesman of NCoS, deputy controller of corrections, Umar Abubakar, the Service deeply regretted the loss of SCA Shuaibu King David.

The statement read, “We regret to announce the tragic demise of Senior Correctional Assistant (SCA) Shuaibu King David, during the unfortunate escape incident at the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Koton-Karfe, Kogi State, on March 24, 2025.”

The statement further highlighted the bravery displayed by the deceased officer during the escape attempt. It noted that SCA King David, while on duty, made the ultimate sacrifice in his efforts to prevent the escape of inmates and safeguard the integrity of the custodial facility. His actions were described as a testament to his “unwavering dedication to service and national security.”

The Acting Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, made the announcement on behalf of the entire Nigerian Correctional Service. Nwakuche extended heartfelt condolences to the family, colleagues, and loved ones of the fallen officer.

He emphasised the significant impact of SCA King David’s sacrifice, stating that “the service and ultimate sacrifice of the deceased officer will forever be remembered and honoured.”

In addition to honouring the late officer, the statement also revealed that the NCoS was actively collaborating with relevant security agencies and local communities to recapture the inmates who remained at large and bring them to justice. The statement reassured the public that measures were being implemented to bolster security in all custodial centres across the nation to prevent similar incidents in the future.

“We remain committed to ensuring the safety of officers and the security of custodial facilities nationwide,” the NCoS declared in the statement.

The statement concluded with a prayer for the deceased officer, saying, “May the soul of SCA Shuaibu King David rest in peace. Amen.”

LEADERSHIP reports that the tragic incident has once again underscored the risks and challenges faced by correctional officers in the line of duty as SCA Shuaibu King David will be remembered as a hero who gave his life in the service of his country.
