A accidental social media post has revealed what Sir Kenny Dalglish had hoped to keep private, the beloved Scottish football icon is currently receiving treatment for cancer.

At 75 years old, Dalglish—whose name is etched into the history of Celtic, Liverpool, and Scotland—issued a heartfelt statement after what he called his “useless technology skills” forced his hand. “Unlike my mobile phone use, the treatment is going well,” he said with characteristic humour.

He went on to request respect for his family’s privacy, explaining that he never intended to make the news public. But the inadvertent post left him with no choice but to confirm the diagnosis. He also took a moment to praise the medical staff, calling them “a credit to themselves” for their incredible care and discretion.

Dalglish’s legacy is monumental. Between 1969 and 1977, he scored 167 goals in 320 games for Celtic, winning four league titles and four Scottish Cups.

He then moved to Liverpool for a British record £440,000, where he became the driving force behind a golden era: three European Cups, eight First Division titles, and later a player-manager who steered the club through the traumatic aftermath of the Hillsborough disaster.

His managerial career also brought the Premier League title to Blackburn in 1995, with further spells at Newcastle, Celtic, and a return to Liverpool in 2011–12. For Scotland, he earned 102 caps and scored 30 goals—a joint national record with Denis Law.

Liverpool responded swiftly, offering “support, best wishes and love” while underscoring his plea for privacy. Former teammate Ian Rush added:

“The King is one of the strongest people I’ve ever known. If anyone can face this battle with courage, it’s King Kenny. We’re all behind you.”

The news comes just a day after another Liverpool great, Kevin Keegan, revealed he has stage four cancer, casting a somber shadow over the football community.
