Ed Sheeran Breaks Down On Stage, Says His Family, Friends Abandoned Him

English singer and songwriter ‎Ed Sheeran walked onto the stage at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, United States, on September 19, 2026, without an opening act and without his usual backing band.

He was alone. For the first time in his career, he opened a concert not with a song, but with a speech. He looked exhausted, and as he spoke, his voice cracked, and he began to cry in front of a crowd of about 50,000 people.

‎The week leading up to that moment had been one of the hardest of his life. It started when the rapper Macklemore, who had been opening for Sheeran on his Loop Tour, made pro-Palestinian comments during a performance at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. In response, the owner of Gillette Stadium, Robert Kraft, barred Macklemore from performing at his venue. The promoter then removed Macklemore from the tour. In solidarity, every other support act walked out. Then his backing band, Beoga, quit too.

‎Sheeran was left with three days to assemble a new band and a decision to make. People he had known for years, including his own cousin, were publicly telling him to cancel the tour. His cousin called him a coward and a bad human online.

‎”In these situations, you really find out who your friends are,” Sheeran told the crowd. “I had so many people telling me to cancel this tour, and so many people I’ve known for years and years and years, they’re kind of backing away. Everyone’s telling me to cancel, and I’m feeling all of my friends and family and people I know abandon me.”

‎He said the thought of walking away from music entirely had crossed his mind. He was not sure the tour would even continue. But then he saw something that changed his mind. Ticket sales for the Philadelphia show had not dropped. People were still buying tickets. “I look at the end of the week, and I see 50,000 people who haven’t abandoned me,” he said.

‎Sheeran admitted he had made mistakes. He apologized. He said he did not know enough and was trying to listen and learn. He also admitted he had removed a smaller stage that usually brought him closer to the audience because he was afraid people might throw things at him. He was worried about his safety.

‎At the end of the show, he apologized again, this time for bringing politics into a concert where families had brought their children. He said it was something he felt he needed to say. The crowd cheered. He looked out at them and said, “The world is a scary place right now. America is a scary place right now. This gives hope.”
