The African Union Commission (AUC) has invited the Edo State commissioner for Power, Paul Usenbo, to speak at a continental forum in recognition of the state’s ongoing power sector reforms.

Usenbo is expected to serve as an inspirational speaker and panellist at the Founder Stage of the Joint 9th Specialised Technical Committee on Finance and the 5th Specialised Technical Committee on Trade, Tourism, Industry and Minerals, scheduled to hold in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, from July 20 to 24, 2026.

The forum will bring together African heads of government, policymakers, investors, entrepreneurs and development partners to discuss strategies for accelerating industrialisation, trade and sustainable development across the continent.

According to the African Union Commission, Edo State was selected to showcase its achievements in the energy sector, describing the state as an example of innovation, strategic leadership and investment-driven governance in support of Africa’s industrialisation and energy sovereignty objectives.

According to the organisers, the invitation follows a series of power sector reforms undertaken by the Edo State government under Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration.

A statement from the office of the commissioner revealed that, “Among the initiatives highlighted are the state’s 10 per cent equity stake in the proposed 100-megawatt Independent Power Plant, the development of the 100MW Ologbo Gas-fired Power Plant, and the implementation of the Edo State Electricity Law aimed at creating an investor-friendly regulatory framework for electricity generation, distribution and regulation. The state has also introduced renewable energy and off-grid electrification projects for underserved communities, advanced plans for the Edo State Metering Assembly to reduce estimated billing and create jobs, and promoted electric mobility through the planned local assembly of electric tricycles. In addition, the government has strengthened partnerships with development finance institutions, investors and international agencies to support funding for sustainable energy projects.’’

At the Abidjan forum, Usenbo is expected to present Edo State’s power sector reform initiatives, focusing on policy reforms, regulatory measures and public-private partnerships designed to attract investment, expand electricity access and support economic growth.
