A violent altercation during Monday’s Eid-el-Fitr celebration in Alwasa community, Argungu Local Government Area of Kebbi State, has resulted in the death of three persons.
The chairman of Argungu LGA, Sani Aliyu-Gulma, disclosed this on Tuesday while briefing Governor Nasir Idris, during his condolence visit to the affected community.
Aliyu-Gulma explained that the incident began on Monday evening when two Fulani youths entered the town on a motorcycle and engaged in stunt riding, locally known as “boris,” as part of Sallah celebrations. Their actions reportedly provoked some residents, who demanded they stop.
Tensions escalated when one of the youths allegedly stabbed a passer-by who was not involved in the dispute. While the suspect fled, his accomplice was apprehended by residents but later rescued by the authorities and taken to Argungu for safety.
The victim later died from his injuries, sparking outrage among local youths, who launched a reprisal attack on Fulani settlements, leading to the killing of two other youths.
Describing the development as unprecedented, Aliyu-Gulma noted that Alwasa had long maintained peaceful relations with visiting Fulani groups during festive periods.
Also speaking, the district head of Alwasa, Sama’ila Muhammad-Mera, condemned the violence, describing it as alien to the community’s values.
In his remarks, Governor Idris expressed deep concern over the incident, stressing that the government would not tolerate lawlessness. He assured residents that those responsible for the killings on both sides would be apprehended and prosecuted.
The governor also appealed for calm and urged residents to avoid further reprisals, while calling on security agencies to carry out their duties effectively.
Meanwhile, the leader of the Fulani community, Ardo Inuwa, confirmed that one of the victims was a relative but pledged the community’s commitment to peace and coexistence.
Governor Idris later announced a donation of N2 million to each of the three bereaved families as support.
