Former minister Femi Fani-Kayode has warned that allegations made by ex-Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai pose a serious threat to Nigeria’s national security.

El-Rufai had recently claimed in a televised interview that he monitored the phone conversations of National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, accused the NSA’s office of importing dangerous chemical weapons, and alleged that Ribadu was working with Uba Sani to persecute him.

Fani-Kayode, who made the statements on his verified X account on Tuesday, said he initially stayed silent out of respect for those involved, but the seriousness of the accusations forced him to speak. He stressed that the claims “go beyond politics” and directly threaten national stability.

He recalled that he, El-Rufai, Ribadu, and Sani were once close allies during the administration of former president Olusegun Obasanjo, and later faced political hostility under Umaru Musa Yar’Adua. Despite political shifts over the years, he said their personal bond had endured, until now.

According to Fani-Kayode, El-Rufai’s latest remarks amount to “a permanent burning of bridges” and raise questions that must be addressed urgently.

He warned that if the NSA’s communications were truly compromised, it could be linked to the same networks responsible for sophisticated attacks and kidnappings.

He urged authorities to investigate the allegations transparently, saying claims of this magnitude cannot be dismissed casually in public discourse.
