The Etsu Nupe and chairman Niger State Council of Traditional Rulers, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, has hailed the role of former Head of State, Gen Yakubu Gowon, on Nigeria’s unity.
The traditional ruler made this known ahead of Gowon’s 90th birthday this weekend.
He recalled that Gowon was instrumental in the formulation and implementation of many policies and programmes that have cemented Nigeria’s unity and progress.
The traditional ruler listed some of them, including the NYSC programme and unity schools, among others, while acknowledging his role during the country’s civil war for the unity of Nigeria.
“I am elated that God, in His infinite mercy, has kept this elder statesman, Gowon, up to this moment. His wisdom, patriotism and love for Nigeria are unparalleled. Gowon has also remained resolute and committed to the Nigerian Project and has never wavered,” he said.
The Etsu also described Gen. Gowon as a wonderful personality and a distinguished leader renowned for his humility, integrity, and honour.
He, therefore, prayed for God to keep him alive and continue with the good work so that the young Nigerians would continue to benefit from his statesmanship.
