The Police Commissioner of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Ajao Saka Adewale, has urged practising journalists to adopt responsible journalism in the interest of national unity and creating a safe environment for their work.

Adewale made this call while addressing attendees at the 2025 Easter Cantata Concert, which was organised by the FCT Council of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) and held yesterday at the Council’s secretariat in Utako.

He emphasised that security is everyone’s responsibility and appealed to journalists to utilise their constitutional right to freedom of speech to contribute positively to national development rather than the contrary.

“Information is compelling and can be wielded either positively or negatively. When used positively, it benefits the nation; however, when misused, it can lead to crises, much like a bullet fired—its consequences cannot be controlled.

I urge you to practise responsible journalism. Let us collectively strive for the peaceful development of this country. You may not be regarded as a first-class citizen in any other nation. This is our home, the only country we can truly claim as our own,” Commissioner Adewale stated.

He noted that freedom of speech is a fundamental aspect of the Constitution and encouraged journalists to think critically about how to leverage this freedom for the betterment of the nation. “Security is everyone’s responsibility; let us work together and do our utmost for this country. As always, I assure you that we are here to support you 24/7,” he added.

In his remarks, the President of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, Alhassan Yahya, urged his colleagues to prioritise national interest above all else and encouraged an atmosphere of forgiveness among members to advance the association.

Grace Ike, Chairperson of the FCT Council of NUJ, highlighted that the purpose of the Easter Concert was to unite journalists, noting that Easter symbolises renewal and hope and embodies the transformative power of unity and progress.
