Ahead of Saturday’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT) area council elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), in strengthening its preparations, met with the National Union of Road Transport Workers and the National Association of Transport Owners to secure a seamless transport plan for the election day.

INEC chairman, Prof Joash Amupitan, speaking at the meeting in Abuja, warned that the commission would not tolerate any lapses that could undermine early deployment.

He stressed that election materials must arrive at polling units by 7:00 a.m., ahead of the official commencement of accreditation and voting at 8:30 a.m.

To achieve this, he said all vehicles transporting materials from RACs are expected to depart between 6:00 a.m. and 6:30 a.m., with attention to varying distances and terrain.

More than 1,100 vehicles have been provided by the unions to cover 2,822 polling units across the six Area Councils.

While acknowledging challenges seen in previous elections, the chairman said improved systems have been put in place to enhance coordination, monitoring and accountability.

He emphasized that only roadworthy vehicles and fully briefed drivers would be allowed to participate in the operation.

Transport union leaders pledged smooth operations, promising stronger monitoring structures, standby vehicles for emergencies and improved discipline among members.

INEC reiterated its readiness to deliver a credible and well-organised election on 21 February 2026, calling on all stakeholders to play their roles in sustaining a peaceful electoral process.
