The federal government has declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a public holiday to mark this year’s Eid ul Mawlid, commemorating the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad.

The declaration was announced on Friday by the Minister of Interior, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr Magdalene Ajani.

Tunji-Ojo extended the federal government’s greetings to Muslims in Nigeria and across the diaspora, urging Nigerians to reflect on the virtues embodied in the life and teachings of the Holy Prophet Muhammad, particularly compassion, humility and service to humanity.

“Every Eid ul Mawlid gives us reason to pause and draw lessons from a life defined by compassion, humility and service to others,” the minister said.

He said these values were especially relevant at a time when the country required greater understanding, tolerance and unity.

“These are qualities our nation needs now more than ever, and I encourage every Nigerian, not just our Muslim brothers and sisters, to reflect on them,” he added.

The minister also encouraged Nigerians to use the occasion to offer prayers for peace, stability and stronger national cohesion.

According to him, building and sustaining national unity is a collective responsibility, urging citizens to promote peace and mutual respect throughout the celebration.

Tunji-Ojo further appealed to Muslims and other Nigerians observing the holiday to celebrate peacefully and responsibly, while wishing the Muslim community a joyous and peaceful Eid ul Mawlid.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the President Bola Tinubu administration to protecting lives and property and promoting peace across the country.

The declaration means workers and members of the public will observe Tuesday, August 25, as a nationwide public holiday in commemoration of Eid ul Mawlid.
