The federal government has stepped up its push for affordable housing delivery with the handover of 24 newly- completed housing units to the University of Ilesa, in a move aimed at easing accommodation pressures and boosting staff productivity in the institution.

The houses, delivered under the National Housing Programme (NHP), were officially handed over at the university’s campus in Osun State by the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development.

Speaking at the ceremony, the minister of housing and urban development, Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, represented by the director of public buildings and housing development, Pemi Samuel Temitope, said the intervention reflects the federal government’s broader strategy to strengthen public institutions through targeted infrastructure.

He stressed that housing remains central to national development, noting that access to decent accommodation directly impacts workforce efficiency and institutional stability.

“Providing affordable and quality housing is not just a social obligation, but a catalyst for productivity and national growth,” the minister said.

Dangiwa further underscored the strategic importance of universities, describing them as engines of innovation and human capital development that must be supported with critical infrastructure.

According to him, the newly – delivered units are expected to provide a conducive living environment for staff, ultimately enhancing service delivery and academic performance within the institution.

He also commended the university management for its collaboration with the ministry, urging the institution to ensure proper maintenance of the facilities to guarantee sustainability.

In his response, the vice chancellor of the university, Taiwo Olufemi Asaolu, described the development as a turning point in the institution’s growth trajectory.

He revealed that the housing provision comes at a critical time as the university intensifies efforts to expand its academic offerings, including plans to establish a Faculty of Technology.

The vice chancellor disclosed that the institution has been shortlisted by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund for high-impact intervention projects, noting that the availability of staff housing now provides a key requirement for such expansion.
