The Federal Government has launched a two-day capacity building workshop aimed at equipping social workers in Kano State with the tools needed to address a range of social and humanitarian challenges.
The workshop, organized by the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction in collaboration with the Ministry of Women Affairs, Children and Disabled Persons, Kano State, is designed to enhance the capacity of social workers in tackling issues such as poverty, gender-based violence, child protection, and humanitarian crises.
Declaring the event open, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Yakubu Adam Kofarmata, said the initiative underscores the government’s commitment to strengthening social welfare systems, empowering communities, and improving the quality of life for vulnerable Nigerians.
“This gathering reflects our dedication to building resilient communities. Without a skilled and motivated workforce, even the best policies cannot achieve their desired impact. That’s why continuous learning, upskilling, and professional development remain our top priorities,” Dr. Kofarmata stated.
Also speaking at the event, the Kano State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Children and Disabled Persons, who was represented by the Director of Administration, Mr. Mohammed Sambo Iliyasu, reiterated the state’s support for social sector development.
In her welcome address, Hajiya Armina emphasized the significance of skill-building initiatives, stating, “Our commitment to skills development is not simply a duty; it is a profound responsibility that shapes the lives of women, children, the disabled, and other vulnerable groups in our communities.”
She encouraged participants to make the most of the training, improve their existing skills, and seek creative solutions that can transform lives.
The event featured a series of technical sessions focusing on the development of the social work profession in Nigeria, the Social Work Regulatory Act, professional ethics and values, and psychological support techniques, particularly in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder.
The workshop is expected to enhance the effectiveness of social workers across Kano State and foster stronger responses to the social challenges facing vulnerable populations.
