A massive fire has destroyed more than 500 stalls at Shuwaki Market in Gari local government area of Kano State.
The Kano State Fire Service confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Thursday by its Public Relations Officer, ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi.
According to the statement, the fire broke out on Wednesday, October 22, at about 3:25 p.m. The control room received a distress call from Commander Abdulmalik Muhd of the Gari Fire Station, prompting the immediate dispatch of firefighters from the Danbatta Fire Station to the scene.
“On arrival, our personnel found that a market space measuring about 3,000 by 2,500 feet, with around 1,000 temporary stalls, was affected. About 529 of these stalls were completely burnt down,” Abdullahi said.
He explained that the firefighters succeeded in bringing the fire under control and prevented it from spreading to other parts of the market and no loss of life was recorded.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the incident was caused by individuals suspected to be drunkards residing in the market.
