No fewer than five shops were destroyed on Tuesday in a fire outbreak at the Timber Market located at Kenyatta Street in Uwani, Enugu State.

Reports indicate that the swift action of the State Fire Service prevented the fire from spreading to other structures in the plywood market.

A firefighter who chose to conceal his identity disclosed that the fire service received an emergency call at 9:45 pm reporting that the market had gutted fire.

He stated that the team immediately responded and put off the fire before it could extend to other areas of the market.

“As you can see, only about five shops were affected by the fire in this big market. I cannot say much on this incident as I am not the Chief Fire Officer,” said the fireman.

An eyewitness who introduced himself as Joe revealed to reporters that he observed the fire shortly after the organised labour called off the nationwide industrial strike on Tuesday.

He added that people around the market rushed in to render assistance before the arrival of the fire service who eventually put off the fire.

“I thank God and the fire service for the quick response, otherwise, it would have been disastrous,” Joe said.
