A Former Commissioner of Police, Dr Emmanuel Ojukwu, has called for enhanced collaboration between civilians and the police to effectively tackle the rising insecurity in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

He made the call in Abuja, during the 2024 Feast of Barracuda, organized by the National Association of Seadogs (Pyrates Confraternity), Sahara Deck (Abuja City Centre), with the theme, “The role of civilian collaboration in enhancing security within the FCT and its environs.”

Ojukwu who is also a former Force Public Relations Officer, stressed that the current security challenges in the FCT require a collective approach, involving both the police and the civilian population.

“The police alone cannot solve the security problems in the FCT. We need the support and cooperation of the civilian population to achieve success,” Ojukwu said.

He emphasized the importance of community policing, urging residents to report suspicious activities and crimes to the police.

Ojukwu also suggested the establishment of a joint task force comprising police officers and civilian volunteers to patrol the streets and prevent criminal activities.

The former police commissioner’s call for collaboration comes amidst growing concerns over the rising cases of armed robbery, kidnapping, and other vices in the FCT.

Also speaking, Capoon, Sahara Deck,Olamide Oni, said,”In recent years, the security situation within the FCT has presented significant challenges, affecting our daily lives and the overall well-being of our communities.

“As we navigate these complexities, it is essential to recognize that security is not the sole responsibility of law enforcement agencies.

“Instead, it requires the active participation and collaboration of civilians, community leaders, private sector stakeholders, and government officials.”Oni said.
