The Interim National Chairman of the Labour Party, Senator Nenadi Usman, has urged political parties to strengthen their grassroots support base to enhance credible elections, stressing that grassroots mobilisation is key to electoral success.
Speaking on the Electoral Act 2026 at a town hall meeting in Abuja, Usman said the success or failure of any political party at the polling unit depends on its preparedness and presence.
She commended lawmakers for approving the electronic transmission of results to INEC’s IReV portal but noted that the controversy surrounding the provision of Section 60(3) has been exaggerated.
She stressed that parties should deploy well-trained agents to protect votes and ensure accurate results.
Usman urged parties to strengthen their internal structures and perform their responsibilities diligently rather than relying solely on INEC.
“Section 84(2) of the Electoral Act 2026, which mandates candidate nominations through direct primaries or consensus, should be guided by party guidelines.
“The credibility of the 2027 elections will depend on Nigerians’ vigilance and collective resolve, not just statutory provisions or institutional mechanisms,” she said.
