A Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) and an Inspector in charge of the Umuna Divisional Police Headquarters in Onuimo local government area of Imo State have been killed by unknown gunmen.

It was gathered that the deceased police officers who were on a stop and search in the front of the Divisional Police Headquarters were gunned down by gunmen in a military uniform operating in a black Hilux Vehicle and immediately sped off to an unknown destination.

It was also learnt that the incident had caused pandemonium in the locality as other motorists had abandoned their vehicles and scampered for safety.

According to the eye witness, “The police officers had blocked the road on a stop and search this morning. But unknown to them the black Hilux van with about five men in military uniform were not actually soldiers but bandits as they opened fire on the unsuspecting police officers and in the process killed the DSP and the inspector and sped off before the other officers who had taken to their heels could react. The incident caused panic and pandemonium as motorists quickly abandoned their vehicles and scampered for safety.”

When contacted, the mobile line of the police spokesman, Michael Abattam, rang repeatedly without response at press time.

In Enugu State, suspected gunmen also attacked Inyi Police Station in Oji River local government area of Enugu State and killed two policemen. Sources said two policemen and about two civilians were feared dead during the attack which lasted for several minutes.

It was gathered that the gunmen reportedly stormed the station Sunday morning and set it on fire. The gunmen, it was further learnt, were chanting “No election and police in Biafra land,” before carrying out the attacks.

The rampaging gunmen also killed the All Progressives Congress (APC) youth leader in Igbo-Eze South local government area of Enugu State, Hon Lucky Idoko. Idoko was reportedly murdered at his hometown, Unadu community in Igbo-Eze south local government  in broad day light last  Saturday while going about his business on a motorbike.

Although details of his reported assassination were still sketchy as of the time of filing this report, it was gathered the said Idoko who is also chairman of Vigilante group in his community was allegedly shot while the passenger he was conveying on his motorbike at the time of the attack escaped unhurt.
