An Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Clement Yunana lost his life in a tragic hit-and-run incident on Wednesday in Gombe.
Confirming the incident, spokesperson of Gombe State Police Command, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, in a statement on Friday, revealed that the late officer was attached to the Railway Police Outstation in Bajoga Division.
According to Abdullahi, the fatal accident occurred at about 5 p.m. on Wednesday near the Matrix Filling Station in Tumfure, Akko local government area of the state.
According to the police spokesman, preliminary findings revealed that an unidentified vehicle, travelling from the Bauchi axis towards Gombe Metropolis, struck ASP Yunana while attempting to cross the road.
“The driver failed to stop or render assistance, fleeing the scene and leaving the officer critically injured.
“The injured officer was rushed to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe, where he was later confirmed dead,” he said.
DSP Abdullahi said the Command has since launched a full investigation into the incident and was intensifying efforts to trace the driver and vehicle involved.
Police appealed to the public for any useful information that could aid in identifying the suspect.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Bello Yahaya, on behalf of the Command, has extended heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased officer.
