On World Environment Day, the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) has reaffirmed its commitment to restoring and protecting the environment in Ogoniland and the wider Niger Delta region.
Under the theme: “Our Land. Our Future: Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience,” HYPREP underscored its multifaceted initiatives to combat the environmental degradation stemming from hydrocarbon pollution.

The project’s coordinator, Prof. Nenibarini Zabbey, who emphasised the critical need for environmental restoration to sustain biodiversity and improve the livelihoods of local communities, also highlighted the organization’s comprehensive initiatives to address the environmental degradation caused by hydrocarbon pollution.

According to him, HYPREP actively engages in various endeavours to address environmental challenges. These efforts include remediating oil-degraded lands and shorelines, restoring mangroves, providing clean water, and strengthening public health systems.

Additionally, HYPREP has established the Centre of Excellence for Environmental Restoration, serving as a focal point for research, training, and community engagement.

He said education is also a priority for HYPREP, as evidenced by the establishment of 20 environmental clubs in secondary schools across Ogoni. These clubs aim to nurture a new generation of environmental stewards, aligning with HYPREP’s commitment to #GenerationRestoration, empowering young people to actively participate in preserving their natural heritage.
