Igali Bids Farewell As Bayelsa Contingent Departs For Niger Delta Games

Honourable Daniel Igali, the Bayelsa State Commissioner for Sports Development, has conveyed the state government’s support to Team Bayelsa as they prepare for the Niger Delta Games, taking place from February 19 to 26, 2026, in Benin, the capital of Edo State.

In a solidarity message on behalf of the Bayelsa State Government, Igali stated that the Niger Delta Games provide an opportunity for states in the region to uncover new talent who can represent their states and Nigeria in international sporting events.

The world and Olympic champion emphasised the crucial role of grassroots events in fostering developmental growth, commending the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and Dunamis-Icon Limited for their positive impact on young people in the region through sports.

Honourable Igali urged Bayelsa athletes to be exemplary ambassadors for the state and to compete fairly.

However, he highlighted that while the games are a developmental programme for young Niger Deltans, the Bayelsa contingent is in Edo to compete earnestly.

“I want to clarify that while developmental programmes are not solely about winning trophies—though we would be pleased to win—they focus on the future of these young athletes.”

“That said, we should approach the games with the intent to compete, just like everyone else. You all know what Bayelsa State has achieved in the sports arena, and on behalf of His Excellency, Senator Douye Diri, the Executive Governor of Bayelsa State, I encourage you to maintain that winning trajectory.”
