Incumbency Will Not Determine 2027 Elections – Ajadi

A governorship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State, Ambassador Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo, has said Nigeria’s leadership in the 2027 general elections will be decided by the will of the electorate, not by the advantage of incumbency.

The PDP aspirant in a statement warned that suggestions portraying electoral outcomes as predetermined could undermine public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic process.

According to him, Nigeria’s democracy is anchored on the constitutional right of citizens to freely choose their leaders through the ballot, irrespective of who occupies political office at any given time.

“The strength of our democracy lies in the power of the electorate,” Ajadi said, adding that elections remain the most legitimate and peaceful means through which citizens express their collective will.

He noted that Nigeria’s political history, as well as experiences across Africa, show that leadership can change when citizens actively participate in the electoral process.

Ajadi, who has declared his intention to contest the Oyo State governorship election, urged Nigerians, particularly youths and first-time voters to remain engaged in civic responsibilities such as voter registration, peaceful mobilisation and participation in elections.

“Democracy thrives when citizens believe in and utilise the instruments provided by the constitution,” he said.

The PDP chieftain also said elections remain the appropriate mechanism for holding leaders accountable, especially at a time when many Nigerians are grappling with economic hardship, security concerns and rising cost of living.

He stressed that occupying public office does not automatically guarantee future electoral success, adding that performance, credibility and public trust remain decisive factors in democratic contests.

Ajadi reaffirmed his party’s commitment to peaceful political competition and called for sustained civic engagement and respect for democratic values as political activities gradually build towards the 2027 polls.
