The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has moved to realign political activities ahead of the Osun State governorship election, enforcing strict compliance with electoral laws by adjusting the campaign deadline for parties and candidates.
The move follows the commission’s earlier decision to shift the date of the governorship poll, a development that necessitated a corresponding review of the campaign window in accordance with statutory provisions guiding elections in Nigeria.
National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, announced the adjustment in a statement on Thursday, stressing that the change was imperative to ensure that all political actors operate within the framework of the law.
INEC noted that under the Electoral Act 2026, campaigns must end at least 24 hours before the conduct of any election, making it necessary to revise the timeline after the governorship poll was moved from August 8 to August 15, 2026.
The commission said the adjustment is part of broader efforts to maintain orderliness, fairness, and legal compliance throughout the electoral process, particularly as preparations intensify for the off-cycle election in Osun State.
It urged political parties and candidates to take the revised schedule seriously, warning that any violation of the campaign timeline would be treated in line with existing electoral laws and guidelines.
INEC also reaffirmed its commitment to delivering a credible and transparent election, assuring stakeholders that all necessary measures are being put in place to safeguard the integrity of the process.
The commission emphasized that adherence to timelines remains a critical component in achieving a free and fair election, while calling for cooperation from all actors involved in the process.
With political activities expected to peak in the coming months, the revised campaign window is seen as a crucial step in ensuring that the electoral process remains orderly and within legal bounds, with campaigns now scheduled to end on August 13, 2026.
