The vice chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Egbewole (SAN), yesterday urged the United States government to assist Nigeria with technology and equipment to effectively tackle insecurity in the country.
Egbewole made the call while addressing the newsmen on ,”UNILORIN @50: Gold Never Rusts” as part of activities marking the golden jubilee of the institution.
Answering a reporter’s question, Egbewole said: “I urge the American government to assist the Nigerian government with technology and equipment both Software and Hardware to defeat the monsters that make our lives nasty, brutish and short ‘,as philosopher Thomas Hobbes would describe the,”State of nature”that appears to be our lot at this critical time.”
He posited that anything other than the assistance of the US government could create a “Cobra Effect” which should be avoided.
He stressed the need for Nigerians to come together, irrespective of ethnic, religion and political affiliations to collectively confront the challenges of insecurity bedeviling the country.
On the journey so far, Egbewole said that,” the institution has made its mark within the past 50 years by recording a good number of firsts, including being consistently ranked the best university in Nigeria and the first Nigerian university to be ranked among the best 20 in Africa.”
He enjoined all stakeholders to support the university in accomplishing its vision, which he noted aligns with the “Strategic Plan of our Golden age.”
He said that university would not turn away from its core values of integrity, networking, justice, excellence and teamwork (INJECT).
