Experts in the design profession made the call in Abuja yesterday, during a summit and exhibition, organised by the Interior Designers Association of Nigeria (IDAN), Abuja Chapter.
The event was part of activities to commemorate the 2024 World Interiors Day with the theme; “The Growing Generational Gap: Improve Multi-generational Future.”

Speaking, the Minister of State, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Dr. Mariya Mahmoud said interior designers need to keep adapting to meet up with the occuring change.

Represented by Arc. Ononokpono Ncheta Benson, the acting director housing, satellite towns development department, the Minister said “The music of 1960 is different from the music of 1980 and also different from the music that people are enjoying in this century.

“So, it goes around to every department of our lives. Even your clothing, what you are wearing now is different from what they wore in the 1960s.

That is the same way interior design is going to change so that is why this growing generation gap is for the interior designers to research what this generation of people want.”

Also speaking, the national vice president of IDAN, Freda Anegbe

said education is key for aspiring interior designers who would want to make an impact in the field.

“As an association we are doing everything we can to invest in equipping interior designers especially our members through education

“So, for upcoming interior designers, education is key because one of the major challenges in designing Industry is the lack of knowledge especially when it comes to the knowledge of materials used for designs,” she said.

Earlier, the chairperson of IDAN, FCT, Kucelli Adetunji said the World Interior Day Celebration was aimed to bring stakeholders to discuss issues that concern the organisation in order to improve its operations.

According to her, the summit was aimed at ensuring that people are more aware of what they do and most importantly, to educate people adequately about the growing generation gap and solutions.
