The International Olympic Committee has declined to open an ethics probe into FIFA President Gianni Infantino, ruling that a complaint over his alleged political neutrality breach falls outside its jurisdiction.
Human rights group FairSquare had argued that Infantino violated the Olympic Charter by showing support for US President Donald Trump, who personally intervened to overturn a red card against US striker Folarin Balogun during the World Cup. The ban was suspended hours before the US faced Belgium, a match they lost 4-1.
The IOC in a statement stated its ethics code does not cover FIFA’s governance decisions or its relations with governments.
Separately, Norway’s football federation is weighing its own complaint to FIFA’s ethics committee over the suspension, having already protested Trump receiving FIFA’s first Peace Prize.
