LeBron James, the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, ended weeks of speculation on Friday by committing to the Philadelphia 76ers on what he confirmed will be the final contract of his legendary 23-year career.

The 41-year-old forward, who departed the Los Angeles Lakers last month after eight seasons, made the announcement via his X account, framing the move not as a victory lap but as a mission to deliver Philadelphia its first championship since 1983.
“I believe I can help make the Philadelphia 76ers a championship team, and I am so excited to energise a new fanbase and start this incredible journey one last time,” James wrote, signaling that the decision was driven by competitive hunger rather than geography or sentiment.
The signing ends a high-stakes recruitment derby that also included the Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors, Minnesota Timberwolves, and his former club, the Miami Heat—all of whom had been linked to the four-time champion in recent weeks.
The announcement carries added weight given James’ age and the toll of 1,800-plus regular-season and playoff games.
However, the 76ers, who have struggled to advance past the second round in the Joel Embiid era, view James as the veteran linchpin who can stabilise their offense, mentor young guards, and shoulder crunch-time playmaking—a role he embraced with the Lakers even as they missed the playoffs in two of his final three seasons.
James won two of his four NBA titles with Miami in 2012 and 2013, and the gaffe briefly ignited fan fervor in South Florida before the 76ers deal materialized.
James’ career has been a homecoming tale as much as a championship odyssey. Drafted first overall by the Cavaliers in 2003, he returned to Cleveland in 2014 after four years in Miami and delivered the city’s first major sports title in 52 years in 2016.
He then joined the Lakers in 2018, winning a bubble championship in 2020. In his post, James acknowledged his enduring bonds with both Miami and Northeast Ohio, writing: “Miami I’ll forever love and Northeast Ohio will always [be] home.” But he offered no such sentimental farewell to Los Angeles, where his tenure ended quietly after a first-round exit and front-office tensions over roster construction.
For Philadelphia, the signing is a seismic gamble. James will turn 42 during the 2026-27 season, and his $48 million player option—now converted into a multi-year max deal—eats up significant cap space.
The move reshapes the Eastern Conference hierarchy, instantly elevating Philadelphia into the betting favorite alongside the defending champion Boston Celtics. James, who has averaged 27.1 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 7.4 assists over his career, will now be tasked with integrating into a system that has historically been guard-driven, while also managing his minutes to remain fresh for a potential playoff run.
