What should have been a straightforward celebration of a new beginning has turned into a subject of intense public debate, drawing religious leaders, church members and social media users into a conversation about love, divorce, remarriage and the expectations placed on pastors.
The marriage of Senior Pastor of The Fountain of Life Church, Lagos, Jimmy Odukoya, to Pastor Mo Jasmine, has generated reactions across Nigeria, with many congratulating the couple while others have questioned the circumstances surrounding their relationship and what it means for the image of the church.
For some, the marriage represents an opportunity for a man who has experienced marital challenges to find love again. For others, particularly those concerned about the conduct expected of religious leaders, the union has opened a difficult conversation about transparency, marital responsibilities and the private lives of public spiritual figures.
The controversy intensified after Odukoya formally introduced his new wife to members of his congregation on Sunday, November 1, 2026, at the church’s headquarters in Ilupeju, Lagos.
The announcement followed a cryptic social media post he had shared a day earlier, featuring two hands wearing wedding rings with the caption, “To New Beginnings.”
The photograph immediately generated speculation, with some followers congratulating him while others wondered whether the pastor had secretly remarried.
During the Sunday service, Odukoya eventually put an end to the speculation, introducing Mo Jasmine as his wife and the church’s new First Lady.
In a moment that appeared carefully planned, the pastor requested a romantic instrumental from the church pianist before making a few dance moves.
He subsequently told the congregation that he had spent some time navigating life alone since becoming the church’s senior pastor.
“So, you know, ever since I became your pastor, I was doing this walk of life alone, and you know, the Bible said it is not good; it said I will find somebody suitable,” he said.
Explaining his decision to remarry, he added: “So, I was looking and searching, and I found.”
He then presented Mo to the congregation, asking members to welcome her as his wife and their new First Lady.
The congregation reportedly responded with cheers and applause as she walked to the altar.
Mo, in her brief remarks, expressed delight at joining the church and standing alongside her husband.
“It’s my pleasure and honour to be here and stand alongside my husband, the senior pastor of the Fountain of Life Church,” she said.
The couple subsequently knelt before the General Overseer of Citadel Global Community Church, Pastor Tunde Bakare, who prayed for their marriage.
Bakare, however, made a statement that appeared to acknowledge the controversy surrounding the union.
“We are not here to sweep anything under the carpet. All things must be done decently and in order,” he said while praying for the couple.
He further expressed hope that their home would become an example for others.
“This home is built on the foundation of peace and stability, and love of God. Nothing will desecrate it. Nothing will dismantle it,” he prayed.
A Previous Marriage And A New Beginning
Odukoya’s remarriage has attracted considerable attention partly because of his previous marriage to Oluwakemi Sade Banjoko, whom he married in London in March 2013.
The marriage produced two children before the relationship eventually ended in separation.
Although the circumstances surrounding the breakdown of the marriage have not been publicly established in detail, reports indicate that the union had ended before Odukoya assumed leadership of The Fountain of Life Church in 2023, following the death of his father, the church’s founder, Pastor Taiwo Odukoya.
The late cleric, who was married to the late Pastor Bimbo Odukoya, died on August 7, 2023, in the United States.
Following his father’s death, Jimmy assumed leadership of the church, becoming one of the prominent young faces in Nigeria’s Pentecostal Christian community.
Beyond his pastoral responsibilities, Odukoya is also known for his career in Nollywood, where he has featured in several productions, including the popular film, The Woman King.
His public profile has therefore placed his personal life under considerable scrutiny.
His new wife, Mo Jasmine, also has a history of marriage.
Born Motunrayo Mo Daniel, she is a pastor, designer and creative entrepreneur. She was previously married to British-Nigerian music producer Mosadoluwa Adegboye, popularly known as itsMOSA.
The former couple reportedly married when they were young and collaborated on creative projects during their relationship.
An old interview marking their 10th wedding anniversary has also resurfaced, attracting renewed attention following her marriage to Odukoya.
In the interview, Mo reflected on the early years of her previous marriage, describing the experience of adjusting to married life.
“I didn’t really have any fears about living with him. It was just the apprehension of not knowing what to expect. Our first year, staying alone, we had a lot of fun,” she said.
Her former husband also expressed appreciation for her, describing her as someone who had helped him through different stages of their relationship.
However, neither the full circumstances nor the precise timeline surrounding the end of their previous marriages have been publicly established.
Allegations, Family Questions And Church Controversy
While the marriage announcement attracted congratulations, attention soon shifted to allegations about the history of the relationship.
A report by Saturday PUNCH on November 7 quoted an unnamed member of The Fountain of Life Church as alleging that Odukoya and Mo had been romantically involved years before their marriage became public.
The source further claimed that Mo had previously been a close friend of Odukoya’s elder sister, Pastor Toluwani Odukoya-Ijogun, popularly known as Tolu, and alleged that their friendship ended after she learnt of the relationship.
“I have also been curious to know who he eventually married because he was dating this Mo lady some years ago after his marriage ended. Mo was Tolu’s best friend. When Tolu got to know she was having a relationship with Jimmy, the friendship ended,” the source alleged.
Another church member reportedly said the announcement generated mixed feelings among members, with some celebrating the development while others expressed disappointment.
The source suggested that some female members who had admired the senior pastor were particularly surprised by the announcement.
However, the allegations have not been independently established, and neither the pastor nor the people named in the claims have publicly confirmed the account.
There is also no established evidence that the reported friendship breakdown resulted from the alleged relationship.
The questions surrounding the family dynamics have nevertheless become part of the wider discussion.
Jimmy’s Response To Critics
As the controversy gathered momentum, Odukoya appeared to address his critics through a social media post.
On November 2, a day after introducing his wife to the congregation, the pastor shared lyrics from King Boizzy’s song, Don’t Pressure Me.
The post contained the words: “If you cannot die for me, don’t pressure me… And if you did not die for me, you cannot condemn me.”
Although he did not specifically identify the people he was addressing, the post attracted attention because of the timing.
Some followers interpreted it as a message to people questioning his decision to remarry, while others argued that the pastor should have addressed the concerns directly.
He later shared romantic photographs of himself and Mo, including a picture of the couple kissing in a church setting.
The photographs generated another round of reactions, with supporters celebrating the couple while critics continued questioning the circumstances surrounding the marriage.
Social Media Divided Over The Marriage
On social media, the reactions have reflected two competing positions: those who believe Odukoya deserves another opportunity at marriage and those who believe the circumstances surrounding the union deserve greater scrutiny.
Some users have argued that marriage breakdown should not permanently prevent anyone from finding love again.
Others have questioned whether pastors should be more transparent about their personal circumstances, particularly when their decisions attract public attention because of their leadership positions.
One of the issues that generated further debate was an old video of Pastor Sarah Omakwu discussing divorce.
In the video, which resurfaced following Odukoya’s remarriage, Omakwu maintained that divorce was wrong regardless of the person involved.
“Even if Adeboye, Oyedepo, Kumuyi, Okonkwo, these fathers in the faith, if any of them divorce it is still wrong. No matter what the reason, it’s wrong,” she said.
Her position generated another argument about whether Christian couples should be allowed to divorce and remarry.
An Instagram user, @sbg_hollabysy, supported her position, writing: “God bless you ma.”
Another user, @peaktouch, commented: “God bless you Ma, only the truth and the truth will set you free.”
However, @osayamencute challenged the position, particularly its treatment of domestic violence and marital infidelity.
“Infidelity is a betrayal of trust; domestic violence is a threat to one’s safety and wellbeing. They are not the same. Marriage is sacred, but no one should be expected to endure abuse to preserve a marriage. Let us preach with wisdom, compassion and a clear understanding of the difference,” the user wrote.
Another user, @jmapelle_em, offered a different perspective, referencing the Catholic Church’s position on divorce and separation.
“It’s why the Catholic church does not grant divorce on request, it’s rare except on grounds of threat to life. But they allow separation during which some couples reunite again,” the user commented.
The reactions suggest that the conversation has moved beyond the pastor’s personal decision to broader questions about Christian marriage, divorce, forgiveness and the treatment of people whose marriages have broken down.
The Bigger Debate: Should Pastors’ Marriages Be Public Business?
The controversy has also revived discussions about the expectations placed on religious leaders and whether their personal relationships should be subjected to the same level of public scrutiny as their teachings.
For many church members, pastors are not merely religious instructors but individuals expected to demonstrate the values they preach.
Consequently, developments in their personal lives often attract questions about consistency, accountability and the example they set for their congregations.
A Saturday PUNCH report published on November 7 noted that the breakdown of marriages involving several prominent Nigerian pastors between 2012 and 2026 had contributed to renewed discussions about divorce within the Christian community.
The report referenced prominent clerics, including Chris Oyakhilome, Chris Okotie, Joshua Iginla and Olumide Emmanuel, whose marital experiences have previously generated public conversations.
However, religious leaders have continued to express different interpretations of biblical provisions concerning divorce, separation and remarriage.
While some maintain that marriage should be preserved except under narrowly defined circumstances, others argue that failed marriages should not automatically deny people the opportunity to rebuild their lives.
For Odukoya and his new wife, the public debate comes at the beginning of another chapter in their lives.
For their supporters, the marriage represents love, companionship and a second chance.
For their critics, questions surrounding the relationship, its history and the expectations of pastoral leadership remain unresolved.
Ultimately, the controversy has exposed a difficult question within Nigeria’s religious community: when a pastor’s marriage ends and another begins, should the conversation focus on the right to find love again or the responsibility to explain the circumstances to the congregation?
For now, while the couple have publicly celebrated their union, the debate over love, faith, family relationships and the private lives of religious leaders shows little sign of disappearing.
