The Kaduna State House of Assembly has approved N152.4 billion as the 2026 budget for the 23 local government councils in the state.
The approval followed the unanimous adoption of the report of the House Committee on Appropriation and Implementation, presented by its chairman, Hon Shehu Yunusa, during plenary presided over by the speaker, Hon Dahiru Yusuf.
Briefing journalists after the session, the speaker disclosed that the budget proposal was earlier transmitted to the assembly by the state governor and subsequently referred to the committee for detailed scrutiny.
According to him, all the 23 local government councils appeared before the committee to defend their 2025 budget performance and present their 2026 estimates.
“We conducted a thorough defence exercise where the local governments justified their proposals. After scrutiny and inputs from members, we harmonised the figures and arrived at N152.4 billion, which has now been passed into law,” he said.
He explained that although the overall budget size remained unchanged, the committee made internal adjustments, including reallocations between recurrent and capital expenditures, to ensure efficiency and balance.
The lawmaker, however, urged local government chairmen to prioritise capital projects that would have direct impact on the people.
Hon Yusuf further assured that the assembly would intensify its oversight functions to ensure proper implementation of the budget across all 23 local government areas.
He also noted that members of the assembly would act as watchdogs in their respective constituencies to ensure accountability at the local government level.
