The federal government has disbursed over N48 billion to vulnerable and poorest households in Kano State under the Household Prosperity and Empowerment – Conditional Cash Transfer (HoPE-CT) programme.

Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Bernard Doro, disclosed this during a ministerial visit and engagement with beneficiaries at Unguwa Uku Model Primary School in Tarauni Local Government Area of Kano state.

He said the intervention, which covered all the 44 local government areas of the state, recorded a total disbursement of N48,130,875,000 in three tranches.

Breakdown of the disbursement showed that the first tranche stood at N19.6 billion, the second at N14.5 billion, while the third tranche amounted to N13.9 billion with each beneficiaries getting up to N75,000.

Doro said the visit was to assess the impact of the programme and engage directly with beneficiaries to ensure that government interventions deliver measurable results.

“This is not a ceremonial visit. I am here to see what this programme is doing on the ground, to listen to beneficiaries and ensure that our policies are translating into real impact,” he said.

He explained that the cash transfer scheme is part of a broader policy framework tagged: “One Humanitarian, One Poverty Response System,” aimed at ensuring coordinated, transparent and result-driven interventions.

The minister added that the programme is being repositioned into a structured poverty graduation system to enable beneficiaries transition from dependency to self-reliance.

He warned that the programme is free, urging beneficiaries to report any form of extortion, while assuring that mechanisms have been strengthened to ensure accountability.

Doro urged beneficiaries to utilise the support judiciously by investing in livelihood activities that would improve their economic status.

Earlier, the Kano State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Children and Persons with Special Needs, Hajiya Amina Abdullahi, said the visit demonstrated the federal government’s commitment to improving the welfare of vulnerable citizens.

She noted that the programme aligns with the state government’s efforts to uplift the socio-economic status of families.

Abdullahi disclosed that the state government had also empowered 5,200 women with N50,000 monthly grants as start-up capital, in addition to supporting 500 families with food items during the International Day of Families.

She said the conditional cash transfer programme had significantly impacted the lives of women, children and persons with special needs by enabling them meet basic needs and improve their livelihoods.
