The Kano State Government has approved the establishment of the Kano State Mobilisation Taskforce on Voter Registration to mobilise and encourage full participation of citizens in the ongoing voter registration exercise.
According to a statement issued by the Cabinet Office spokesperson, Musa Tanko, the committee has the Commissioner of Information, Comrade Abdullahi Waiya as its chairman.
The statement noted that the high-powered committee will be formally inaugurated by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) in due course and would be charged to ensuring maximum success of the exercise and ensuring that every eligible Kano citizen registers to vote.
Members of the taskforce include the Commissioner of Women Affairs, Children and Disabled, Hajiya Amina Abdullahi; Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Special Adviser Population, Special Adviser on Student Affairs, Special Adviser on Political Mobilisation, Special Adviser on Inter-Party Affairs, Director General, Research and Documentation Directorate and the Managing Director of Kano State Radio Corporation.
Others include representatives of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Chairperson, Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), Kano Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC), business communities and representatives of Central Working Committee of Self-Help Groups and Civil Society Organisations, among others.
While calling on all relevant stakeholders and the general public to join hands with government in achieving the desired goal, the statement also highlighted that voter registration was not just a routine exercise, but a civic responsibility that helps in shaping the future of governance in the state and country at large.
