Garun Malam Local Government Area Council in Kano State has announced the indefinite closure of the Kwanar Gafan Tomato Market, citing concerns over illicit activities, including prostitution, adultery, homosexuality, and other immoral behaviours reportedly taking place within and around the market.

The chairman of the local government council, Barr. Aminu Salisu Kadawa, comfirmed the closure to journalists. He stated that all market occupants must vacate the premises by January 1, 2025, warning of strict consequences for those who fail to comply with the order.

“Given the market’s growing notoriety as a hub for prostitution and other immoral activities, which contradict its intended purpose, it is necessary to close it indefinitely in order to restore sanity,” Kadawa said. “The market has become a haven for criminals, armed robbers, and other wrongdoers.”

The deadline, which expires on January 1, 2025, mandates that all traders and occupants to remove their belongings and leave the market.

Kadawa assured that a reopening date would be announced once the market’s operations have been thoroughly reviewed.
