The Kano State Government has dismissed speculations over Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s recent public appearance without the symbolic red cap, saying there was no directive from him to his supporters to abandon the Kwankwasiyya movement’s traditional red and white attire.

The clarification was made by the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, in a short Facebook post, following the governor’s outing in Yola, Adamawa State, where he attended a party gathering alongside Vice President Kashim Shettima, Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State and other prominent personalities.

Governor Yusuf’s appearance without the red cap had sparked political discussions of an escalating rift between him and his political mentor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who leads the Kwankwasiyya movement known for its white attire and red cap.

Reacting to the development, Dawakin Tofa said the governor’s appearance in Yola was for a special event where guests dressed uniformly, stressing that no instruction had been issued to discard the red cap.

“There has not been any directive to remove the red cap. The outing in Yola, Adamawa State, was a special occasion where distinguished personalities appeared in a particular dress style. Everything has its time,” he said.

LEADERSHIP reports the governor’s camp had maintained that political realignments involving the ruling All Progressives Congress and the New Nigeria Peoples Party do not mean abandoning the Kwankwasiyya ideology, insisting that supporters will continue wearing the movement’s traditional white outfit and red cap despite party divergence. To that effect, Governor Yusuf had worn the traditional Kwankwasiyya red and white on the day of his official defection to the APC sparking varied reactions at the time.
