GYB Model Science Secondary School, Lokoja, Kogi State, has emerged winner of the 2026 Prince Olatunji Olusoji Foundation (PROOF) Spelling Bee Competition organised by the Kogi State branch of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA Nigeria) as part of activities marking this year’s Children’s Day celebration.
The competition, held to promote literacy and academic excellence among students, was organised under the leadership of the chairperson of State chapter of FIDA, Barrister Oluwakemi Omeiza-Usman, and sponsored by the founder and chairman of the Prince Olatunji Olusoji Foundation (PROOF), Engr. Dr. Asiwaju Prince Olatunji Olusoji.
Six secondary schools participated in the contest, demonstrating impressive spelling skills, vocabulary knowledge and confidence across two competitive stages designed to test their intellectual abilities and composure under pressure.
At the end of the preliminary round, three schools advanced to the final stage of the competition. They included GYB Model Science Secondary School, Lokoja, Majesty International College and Crowther Memorial College.
The final round produced a keenly contested battle among the three schools, with participants displaying remarkable academic prowess before an enthusiastic audience.
GYB Model Science Secondary School eventually clinched the top prize with 17 points, narrowly edging out Majesty International College, which finished as first runner-up with 16 points. Crowther Memorial College placed third after a strong showing in the competition.
The organisers rewarded outstanding contestants with certificates, cash prizes and other gift items in recognition of their performance and commitment to academic excellence.
Beyond the competition, the event provided an avenue for encouraging reading culture, intellectual development and healthy academic rivalry among students. It also underscored the commitment of FIDA Kogi State and the Prince Olatunji Olusoji Foundation to supporting educational advancement and empowering young people through impactful learning initiatives.
