LASG Moves To Tackle Problem Of Flooding In Lagos Island

Lagos State government on Friday said it would soon commence reconstruction of some major roads in the highbrow Lagos Island to tackle the problem of flooding and improve interconnectivity in the axis.

Special adviser to the governor on Infrastructure, Engineer Olufemi Daramola stated this at a stakeholders’ meeting for the reconstruction of Idumagbo Avenue, Ojo Giwa Oroyinyin, Moshalasi Okoya, Iga-Idunganran streets and the completion of Adeniji Adele Road in Lagos Island.

He said, “The projects will help to improve connectivity within the axis and most importantly abate the issue of flooding, urban regeneration as well. It is being done in conjunction with LASURA and the Office of Drainage Services to get a final solution to these flooding issues, making accessibility seamless in the whole Lagos Island. This will further improve the value of properties and enhance the quality of lives of Lagosians.”

He urged the residents of Lagos Island to cooperate with the present administration in its commitment to ensuring urban regeneration, reconstruction, renewal, rehabilitation and reconstruction of road projects and drainage system in the area.

Daramola said that no fewer than 15 road projects would be embarked upon in collaboration with the office of the special adviser on Enterprise Geographic Information Service (E-GIS) and Urban Development, Olajide Babatunde, relevant ministries in the state, urging residents to cooperate with the contractor in commitment to the state government improving connectivity and providing social amenities for the people.

Also, the permanent secretary, Office of Infrastructure, Lateef Somide, said the stakeholders’ meeting was in commitment of the state government efforts to fostering inclusive governance in Lagos Island which is a commercial centre as well as de-flooding the area in line with the THEMES Plus agenda as works commenced on the road projects which would have social impacts, reduce travel time, among other benefits.

In his remarks, permanent secretary, Office of Drainage Services in the state, Mahmood Adegbite, urged residents to cooperate with the state government to enhance the aesthetic value, improve the drainage channels, while calling on people in the area to ensure they have septic tanks in their houses, proper waste disposal, as the government embarks on the reconstruction of the drainages and roads in the area.

Other stakeholders at the event, in their separate remarks, urged the state government to build recreational centres in the axis, work more on removing illegal structures and ensure compliance with environmental laws, restating their support for the state government in its bid to make the area livable and conducive for residents.
