A High Court in Birnin-Kudu local government area of Jigawa State has sentenced one Bashir Umar to life in prison for raping a nine-year-old girl.
Justice Musa Ubale, after considering the evidence presented to the court against the man, found him guilty of the charges filed against him.
He said, “The court has found the defendant guilty of both counts of rape and causing grievous bodily harm to the victim, contrary to the Jigawa State criminal law.
“After finding Bashir guilty beyond reasonable doubt, the court hereby convicts and sentences him to life imprisonment.
“He is also ordered to pay a compensation of N1 million to the victim. The Jigawa State Ministry of Justice is also directed to ensure that his name is entered in the Naming and Shaming Registrar of Sexual Offenders.”
Reacting to the judgment, the attorney general and commissioner for justice, Barrister Bello Abdulkadir Fanini, described it as a landmark in the fight against rape in the state.
According to him, the state governor, Malam Umar Namadi, has ordered the judiciary to take drastic measures to ensure that such elements face the law.
He reiterated the commitment of the state government to discharge its constitutional mandate of protecting lives, dignity and property of people in the state, guided by the law, best international practices and driven by its 12-Point Agenda.
