Metering Rate Rises To 56% As Distribution Companies Installs 187,000 Meters In 2 Months

Nigeria’s national electricity metering rate has risen to 56.07% as of October 2025, marking a steady improvement in closing the country’s longstanding metering gap.

This is according to the latest Metering Factsheet released by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

The Factsheet showed that electricity distribution companies installed more than 187,000 new meters in September and October 2025, according to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission’s latest Metering Factsheet.

The document, released on Friday, indicates steady progress in narrowing the country’s longstanding metering gap. It shows that 80,943 customers were metered in September, while an even higher 106,822 meters were installed in October.

This month-on-month improvement pushed the national metering rate from 55.37 per cent to 56.07 per cent. The number of active electricity customers rose slightly from 12.03 million to 12.07 million during the period, while the total number of metered customers increased from 6.66 million to 6.77 million.

NERC’s report highlighted Aba Power as the standout performer, raising its metering rate from 69.49 per cent in September to 78.20 per cent in October. Eko and Ikeja DisCos also maintained their positions as national leaders, sustaining metering rates above 84 per cent.

Abuja and Ibadan DisCos recorded steady additions, contributing to the overall national growth. However, several utilities — including Enugu, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, and Yola, remained below the 50 per cent metering threshold.

Summarising the findings, the report stated: “The September and October 2025 Metering Factsheet is out, showing how DisCos are progressing in closing Nigeria’s metering gap. Here’s what the data shows:
September 2025: 12.03M active customers, 6.66M metered, 80,943 customers newly metered, and national metering rate of 55.37 per cent.

“October 2025: 12.07 million active customers, 6.77M metered, 106,822 customers newly metered, and national metering rate of 56.07 per cent, a steady month-on-month improvement.

“DisCo Performance: Strong improvement from Aba (69.49 per cent to 78.20 per cent) and consistent gains from Abuja, Eko, Ikeja, and Ibadan. Eko and Ikeja remain the top performers with metering rates above 84 per cent.

“DisCos with metering rates below 50 per cent, including Enugu, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, and Yola, continue to meter new customers; however, accelerated rollout is still required to close the gap.”

The electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) operating in Nigeria, metered a total of 106,822 customers in October, 2025, achieving a 56.07 per cent national metering rate within the period.

According to the Factsheet, the October metering rate was higher than then 80,943 customers metered in September, and metering rate of 55.37 per cent.

The report also shows that the number of active electricity customers increased from the 12,030,315 million recorded in September 2025, to 12,071,018 million in October 2025.

Cumulatively, the NERC report revealed that a total of 6,661,564 million customers were metered in September 2025, while a total of 6,768,386 million customers were metered in October 2025.

The report shows a strong improvement from Aba (69.49 per cent to 78.20 per cent) and consistent gains from Abuja, Eko, Ikeja, and Ibadan. However, Eko and Ikeja remain the top performers with metering rates above 84 per cent.
