Morocco produced one of the biggest upsets of the FIFA World Cup Round of 32, defeating the Netherlands 3-2 on penalties after a dramatic 1-1 draw following extra time to secure a place in the last 16.

The North Africans displayed remarkable resilience to overturn the odds, recovering from a late deficit before holding their nerve in the shootout to eliminate the Dutch in a pulsating contest.

The opening half was a cagey affair, with both sides cancelling each other out in a disciplined tactical battle and creating few clear-cut chances as they went into the interval goalless.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 72nd minute when Cody Gakpo fired the Netherlands into the lead with a clinical finish, seemingly putting the European side on course for victory.

Morocco, however, refused to surrender. Deep into stoppage time, Ilias Diop struck a dramatic equaliser to spark wild celebrations and force the match into extra time.

Neither side could find a decisive goal in the additional 30 minutes, leaving the tie to be settled by a tense penalty shootout.

Morocco held their composure from the spot, while the Netherlands faltered at crucial moments. Wout Weghorst’s missed penalty proved decisive before Ilias Saibari calmly converted the winning kick to seal a memorable 3-2 shootout victory.

The result sends Morocco into the last 16 and reinforces their growing reputation as one of the tournament’s most dangerous teams. Jubilant scenes followed the final penalty as players and supporters celebrated another landmark achievement on the world stage.
