Media Rights Agenda (MRA) has welcomed the adoption of a Policy Framework on Information Integrity in West Africa and the Sahel, describing it as a timely step in tackling the rising wave of disinformation, misinformation and hate speech threatening the region’s information space.

The 19-page framework was adopted on Friday, September 5, 2025, at the end of a three-day Regional Conference on Information Integrity in West Africa and the Sahel, convened by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) in partnership with the Government of Capo Verde. The conference, held in Praia, Capo Verde, brought together governments, regional bodies and civil society actors.

According to UNESCO, the policy seeks to foster trust in the information ecosystem, advance digital platform governance and uphold human rights in response to the misuse of emerging technologies and the growing spread of harmful content.

In a statement signed by its Programme Officer, Ms. Adesewa Akintokun, MRA commended UNESCO, governments and civil society stakeholders who contributed to the process.

She said: “At a time when the spread of false and misleading information undermines democracy, fuels conflict and erodes public trust in institutions, this initiative provides an important blueprint for fostering a healthier and more resilient information environment.”

Akintokun noted that the framework’s emphasis on freedom of expression and access to information, while ensuring accountability and ethical standards, makes it a balanced tool for addressing threats without becoming a cover for censorship.

She also welcomed the adoption of two complementary instruments – the Praia Action Plan for Information Integrity in West Africa and the Sahel and the Guide for Regulators to Implement the Information Integrity Model Policy – describing them as positive milestones.

However, the MRA official stressed that the real test of the framework lies in its implementation. “We urge all stakeholders to demonstrate the political will, commitment and collaboration necessary to translate the document into concrete actions that will advance information integrity and democratic resilience in West Africa and the Sahel,” she said.

Reaffirming the organisation’s commitment, Akintokun added that MRA will continue to work with governments, media, civil society and other actors to safeguard journalists, strengthen media institutions and empower citizens to actively participate in democratic governance.
