The National Sports Commission (NSC) has conveyed its profound sorrow following the death of Dr. Chamberlain Nnamdi Dunkwu, President of the Nigeria Aquatics Federation (NAqF). His passing has been described as a considerable loss to the Nigerian sporting fraternity.

Dr. Dunkwu earned widespread respect for his unwavering dedication to advancing aquatic sports across Nigeria. Throughout his tenure, he was instrumental in fortifying the infrastructure for swimming and other water sports, whilst simultaneously establishing avenues for promising young athletes to demonstrate their abilities both domestically and on the international stage.

In response to the news, Bukola Olopade, the Director-General of the NSC, characterised Dr. Dunkwu’s death as a grievous blow to Nigerian sport. This sentiment was conveyed in a statement issued on Saturday, 7th March, by Kola Daniel, S.A. Media, Office of the Director General, National Sports Commission.

“The news of Dr. Chamberlain Dunkwu’s passing is profoundly upsetting. He was a dedicated sports administrator who committed his energies to the expansion of aquatic sports in Nigeria. His enthusiasm for unearthing and cultivating young talent will not be overlooked,” stated Olopade.

He further added, “Dr. Dunkwu held a strong conviction in sport’s capacity to revolutionise lives, particularly amongst young individuals. His vision for aquatic sports development was unequivocal, and his commitment to that objective was truly commendable. The Nigerian sports family will undoubtedly miss his leadership, sagacity, and zeal.”

Under Dr. Dunkwu’s stewardship, the NAqF experienced a revitalised emphasis on grassroots initiatives, enhanced support frameworks for athletes, and more robust collaborations within Nigeria’s broader sports ecosystem.

Beyond his contributions to sport, Dr. Dunkwu also held a public governance role as Deputy Chief of Staff to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, where he played a key part in administrative coordination and institutional leadership within the National Assembly.

The NSC has extended its heartfelt condolences to the late sports administrator’s family, the Nigeria Aquatics Federation, and the entirety of the Nigerian sporting community. Dr. Dunkwu’s contributions are anticipated to forge an enduring legacy in aquatic sports, serving as an inspiration for future cohorts of athletes and administrators alike.
