The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has launched its 2026 farming season, reinforcing efforts to reposition correctional centres as platforms for rehabilitation, productivity and skills acquisition.

The Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, made the call for a shift in public perception of inmates during the flag-off ceremony held at the Dukpa Farm Centre, Federal Capital Territory, Abuja on Friday.

According to a statement by the Service public relations officer, Chief Superintendent of Corrections Jane .N Osuji, the Controller-General urged Nigerians to view persons in custody not as “awaiting trial” alone, but as individuals capable of becoming productive members of society through structured rehabilitation programmes.

He said the agricultural initiative remains a key component of the Service’s reform strategy, designed to support inmate reformation while contributing to national food security.

Nwakuche also appealed for increased collaboration with private sector partners through Public-Private Partnerships to expand the Service’s agricultural output.

He disclosed that the NCoS currently has access to over 12,263 hectares of arable land across its farm centres, supported by inmate labour, adding that investment in modern farming tools and technical expertise was necessary to maximise productivity.

The CG said the programme aligns with the Federal Government’s food security agenda while equipping inmates with practical skills for reintegration into society upon release.

He encouraged inmates to actively participate in the farming activities, describing it as a vital part of the Service’s rehabilitation framework.

Nwakuche commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, for their support in strengthening reforms within the correctional system.

The ceremony featured the symbolic flag-off of farming activities, tours of the Dukpa Farm Centre, and engagements with inmates and stakeholders.
