Nick Reiner, son of Hollywood director Rob Reiner, has pleaded not guilty to charges of murdering his parents during a court appearance in Los Angeles.
The 32-year-old entered the plea through his lawyer on Monday as he faced two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the deaths of his father, filmmaker Rob Reiner, 78, and his mother, Michele Singer Reiner, 70. Prosecutors allege that the couple were killed inside their Brentwood home in December.
Authorities say the victims were discovered on 14 December by their daughter. The Los Angeles County medical examiner later confirmed that both died from multiple sharp-force injuries. Reiner was arrested the same day and has remained in custody since.
If convicted, he could face life imprisonment without parole or the death penalty under California law, according to prosecutors.
During the arraignment, Reiner appeared in court wearing a brown jail-issued jumpsuit. His next court date has been scheduled for 29 April.
Reports from US media outlets suggest that Reiner and his father attended a social gathering the night before the incident, where an argument allegedly broke out. However, details of the dispute remain unclear.
The case has drawn significant attention due to Rob Reiner’s long career in Hollywood. The acclaimed director was known for films such as This Is Spinal Tap, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally, and Stand By Me.
