A non-governmental organisation, Aspire Greatness Initiative (AGI), has said the country can be great again if the citizens become more united, peaceful, and patriotic and ensure justice for all, irrespective of ethnic, political or religious leanings.
AGI stated this in a statement by the chairman and a member of its board of directors, Pius Nzewuihe and Oladokun Hassan, respectively, made available to LEADERSHIP after its inauguration in Umuahia, Abia State capital.
The statement read in part: “AGI is envisioned to mobilise individuals, ethnic, political, social and religious groups towards national consciousness and development”.
“Summarily, we must aspire for greatness again as a country in every facet of our lives. Be it economics, social development, education, medicine, food sufficiency, sports, art, and music.”
“AGI is here to re-create the consciousness of nationalism and patriotism while pursuing and encouraging peace, unity, and justice through engagement with various levels of governments and groups.
It encouraged the youth, whom it referred to as “Tomorrow People”, to be at the forefront of its aspirations, adding that they have a central role in harnessing the human and material resources God blessed the country with.
“We also recognise the various policies and instruments from both private and public institutions addressing various issues of concern, yet we cannot deny that we have not yet arrived. “
“Consequently, peace, unity and justice remain the bedrock of our nation’s developmental objective and yet require more attention.
The statement argued that other nations, both on the African continent and others, had endured even tougher times than ours, yet they survived them through patriotism. Hence, we must do the same.
It added that it behoves “us all, adults and youths alike, to step out and be counted to embrace AGI to nurture a generation of leaders and followers to raise the bar for the country’s growth.
“In this wise, we shall be organising forums to engage ethnic nationalities, religious groups, traditional institutions, academia, governments at all levels, civil society organizations, trade unions, youths, students, and parents for an all encompassing approach to issues of national concern.”
