President Bola Tinubu yesterday said Nigeria was set to deepen economic partnership with Saint Kitts & Nevis, with a focus on key sectors including trade, energy and agriculture.
Speaking during a meeting with the Prime Minister of Saint Kitts & Nevis, Dr. Terrance Michael Drew at the State House in Abuja, President Tinubu emphasised the importance of strengthening bilateral relations and exploring mutual opportunities between Africa and the Caribbean.
“It’s a very great opportunity for Africa to connect widely, and Nigeria in particular, to strengthen our bilateral relations and examine and exploit all the economic opportunities that are available to us so that we can achieve more for ourselves,” Tinubu stated.
The meeting, held on the sidelines of an investment summit in Abuja, marked a significant step in Nigeria’s push to forge stronger economic and diplomatic ties beyond the continent.
Prime Minister Drew said the visit reflected the Caribbean nation’s intention to build a solid bridge between the CARICOM region and Africa, particularly Nigeria, which he described as a leader on the continent.
“I came here from Saint Kitts & Nevis, the CARICOM, the Caribbean, and we are seeking to establish greater ties between the Caribbean and our African brothers and sisters here, as we call it, the motherland,” Drew said.
He identified agriculture, energy, logistics, transport, and trade as key areas of collaboration, adding that food security and sustainable energy remain top priorities for both nations.
Drew also disclosed that discussions were ongoing with Nigerian firms to explore investment opportunities in Saint Kitts & Nevis.
“We are looking at energy as well as logistics and transport and trade. We have discussed a number of other areas, including education, but those are the key sectors we are focusing on at this particular time,” he added.
The two leaders agreed that enhanced cooperation between them could serve as a model for broader Africa-Caribbean engagement in the years ahead.
