The Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) has assured the public its readiness to address potential health emergencies linked to the human metapneumovirus (HMPV).

This follows recent media inquiries about the Institute’s preparedness in light of reports of HMPV activity in China. NIMR, Nigeria’s foremost medical research agency, reaffirmed its commitment to fulfilling its mandate should the need arise.

In a press statement signed by its director general, Prof. John Oladapo Obafunwa, and made available to LEADERSHIP on Thursday, NIMR disclosed that it is closely collaborating with relevant government agencies and institutions.

NIMR assured that this partnership aligns with the nation’s efforts to strengthen preparedness against all health emergencies, ensuring a robust response mechanism is in place for any eventualities.

The institute also supported the guidance issued by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), urging the public to adhere strictly to the health advisories provided. It emphasised that public vigilance and adherence to these guidelines are key to preventing the spread of respiratory infections, including HMPV.

Globally, the World Health Organization (WHO) has not recorded any unusual patterns linked to HMPV outbreaks in China or elsewhere. WHO noted that increases in respiratory infections are typical during the winter season, often caused by seasonal influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and other pathogens, including HMPV. While there have been no emergency declarations, WHO recommends standard preventive measures such as handwashing, mask-wearing in crowded areas, and staying home when experiencing mild symptoms.

HMPV, a respiratory virus discovered in 2001, primarily affects young children, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems. It is part of the Pneumoviridae family, including RSV, and has become increasingly recognised as a significant cause of respiratory infections due to advancements in molecular diagnostic testing.
