The Nigerian movie industry is in mourning following the death of popular actress and director Oby Kechere.
The Directors Guild of Nigeria (DGN) confirmed the news on Friday, stating that the actress passed away on Monday, April 27, 2026, after a long illness. Ms Kechere was a prominent figure in the industry, famously known for her role as “Ms Koi Koi” in the 2002 comedy classic Aki na Ukwa.
In a statement released by the DGN President, Uche Agbo, the guild expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the actress, who served as the Vice Chairman of the DGN Abuja Chapter.
“It is with deep sorrow and a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Madam Cecilia Oby Kechere,” the statement noted. “On behalf of the National Executive Council and the entire DGN family, I extend my deepest condolences to her family and loved ones.”
Ms Kechere’s career, which began in the early 2000s, was marked by her versatility as both a performer and a behind-the-scenes professional. Beyond her screen credits, she was often cited for her dedication to professional ethics and mentorship within the Abuja filmmaking circle.
