As part of its efforts towards improving the well-being of the residents of the north-east zone, the North East Development Commission (NEDC) yesterday trained 34 doctors drawn from different states of the geopolitical zone on cervical cancer elimination.
The commission in collaboration with Federal University of Health Sciences Azare and University of Miami of the United States of America and other partners trained the 34 doctors with a view to stepping down the training in their various places.
At the opening ceremony of the workshop held at Custodian Hotel, Gombe, the managing director of the commission, Mohammed Goni Alkali, represented by the manager humanitarian services of the commission, Sadiya Shehu, explained that the training was aimed at eradicating cervical cancer in the region.
“As we gathered here for the training of trainers on cervical cancer screening and treatment, we must remember this is the first step of the path we have chosen to combat cervical cancer.
“The knowledge, expertise, commitment that will emanate from this room today will be a driving force of our mission to extend this life-saving intervention to every corner of the region,” he said.
Also, the Gombe State commissioner for health, Habu Dahiru, described cervical cancer as a serious public health concern affecting the lives of women at their reproductive age.
He said to achieve the elimination of the disease, there was the need to ensure regular screening of women for early detection while those found to be infected should be treated.
